What Is a Neocloud?
A neocloud is a cloud provider built specifically around GPU compute for AI workloads. Unlike hyperscalers (AWS, GCP, Azure) that offer hundreds of services across general-purpose infrastructure, neoclouds focus almost entirely on renting high-performance GPUs – typically via bare-metal or thin-VM access – with fast interconnects tuned for AI training and inference.
The term emerged in late 2024 and gained wide adoption in 2025 as companies like CoreWeave, Nebius, Crusoe, and Lambda scaled rapidly to meet demand that hyperscalers couldn’t fill fast enough. CoreWeave went public in early 2026, and Nebius posted 830% year-over-year revenue growth in Q4 2025. ABI Research forecasts more than 2,200 neocloud-operated data centers globally by 2035, up from 558 in 2025.
Why Neoclouds Exist
The GPU shortage that began in 2023 exposed a structural gap: hyperscalers were not built to prioritize GPU-dense workloads. Their provisioning timelines, pricing models, and network architectures were designed for general cloud computing. Neoclouds fill that gap by shipping the latest GPU hardware faster (often weeks after an NVIDIA launch rather than months), offering bare-metal access that avoids virtualization overhead, and pricing GPU hours transparently.
For AI teams running distributed training or high-throughput inference, this matters. Bare-metal access eliminates the latency penalties of virtualization, and purpose-built networking (InfiniBand or tuned Ethernet) reduces communication bottlenecks during multi-node jobs.
Neoclouds vs. Hyperscalers
The tradeoff is scope. Hyperscalers offer a full ecosystem, including storage, databases, identity management, compliance tooling, and managed services. Neoclouds offer raw GPU power and the infrastructure immediately around it. Many enterprise teams use both: neoclouds for GPU-heavy AI work, hyperscalers for everything else.
